Stonecroft Farms

Since 1863 the Rivers family has carried on a mixed farming tradition in the heart of Oxford Couty, Ontario. Five generations later, the tradition continues, with a bedrock no-till cropping system enhanced by Heritage livestock. Crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, oats and hay are grown without tillage and fed to our Berkshire and Tamshire pigs and our Lincoln Red cross cattle. Wild areas are maintained as a home for bees, butterfly’s and other wildlife. Deer, coyotes, rabbits and songbirds are abundant.

Berkshires are very hardy animals that produce high quality, marbled meat. Berkshire pork is  prized for its sweet, rich flavour, delicate texture and unbelievable level of juciness.

Heritage Lincoln Red Cross Cows

Lincoln Red Cross Cows

This breed was recognized as a separate breed in the first volume of the Coates Herd Book in 1822. The Lincoln Red is now a genetically protected foundation breed in Canada and England.

Grass fed? Grain fed? Why one or the other?

The cows are on pasture. Their feed is supplemented with mixed hay (which when left to bloom is perfect for bees). Another forage is Oatlage. This is planted in August as soon as the wheat is off. It is harvested in late October, leaving the soil covered and in great shape.

We like to think of this as growing the burger and the bun in the same field in the same year! IMG_0084A small amount of grain is fed to carry some extra vitamins and give the gang a treat. The result is delicious marbled beef for you!
